Catie Grace is such a sweet baby. She only cries when she gets really upset which isn't very often. Mostly she is a grunter instead of a screamer. I will take that any day over a baby crying all the time! When we left the hospital, the doctor said that Catie Grace was a bit jaundice, so we needed to go to the pediatrician's office the next morning. The pediatrician was concerned that Catie Grace was pretty jaundice and her weight had gotten down to 7lbs 4oz. At that point, I was still trying to exclusively nurse Catie Grace so the doctor suggested that we supplement with formula so we could actually see how much she was eating. That night we had to wake her up every two hours to try to get her to eat. We had to go back to the pediatrician for blood work (to check her bilirubin levels for the jaundice) and to check her weight. By the next morning after a night of giving her formula and nursing, she was up to 7lbs 13oz. Her bilirubin levels were still high, so we had to go back to the pediatrician for blood tests for the next two mornings. We had to be there at 7:30 a.m. each morning which was NOT easy with a newborn!
By the next Tuesday morning (one week old) Catie Grace was back up to her birth weight! Since we had struggled with nursing anyway and then had to introduce bottles to give her formula, Catie Grace and I fought for a few more days to get her to nurse. Finally we decided that she still wasn't getting enough to eat by nursing (she's a bit of a lazy nurser) so I decided to pump and give her my milk. She hasn't needed formula since then and was eating between 2-3 ounces of breast milk at each feeding. Of course I didn't want to deal with pumping and cleaning bottles, but it was much more important to make sure this little one was getting enough to eat!
