The Cloth Diaper Saga... Going Traditional

I wanted to write a little more about some of the new things we have added to our diaper stash, so here it goes:

About two months ago Gerry and I got some Rumparooz one-size pocket diapers to try! Below you can see the different facets of the Rumparooz diaper (courtesy of KellysCloset.com).

So the Rumparooz are pretty much like the other pocket diapers we have except that they are really, super thick! The diapers come with a 6R super soaker-which is basically an extra soak pad that snaps into the diaper. I thought that sounded like a great idea for overnight (when she will go 10-12 hours without a diaper change) but the diaper ended up being so bulky that she could barely move her legs! I think the soaker pad will be better (and more needed) when Catie Grace is a little older.

Once we removed the soaker pad, the diaper fit MUCH better and did its job. These diapers are great as far as leaks, but we usually only use them at night because they are so bulky...and that's saying a lot for a cloth diaper because they are already huge!

About the same time that we got the Rumparooz, I had been telling Gerry that I really wanted to try the more traditional cloth diapers. We wanted a few more diapers in the stash and I thought- ok, I have a bunch of $16-$24 diapers, let's see what these $9.99 diapers are all about. One day Gerry went over to The Little Twig here in Chattanooga and surprised me with three new traditional, pre-fold diapers- the Econobums. I was pretty excited to try these diapers, so here's what I thought.

The Econobums are the pre-fold cloth diapers (basically a very thick piece of cloth that you fold a certain way around the baby and then cover with a plastic diaper cover. Easy, right? Well, not really. I actually had to get my mom to show me how to put the diapers on Catie Grace because I was struggling! These are the kinds of diapers my mom (and maybe your mom too) used 20+ years ago. Basically, you fold the diaper around the baby and use a snappy (pictured below) to secure the diaper.
The snappies are actually pretty cool. Instead of a diaper pin, you just stretch the elastic across the diaper to make it stay. Each end of the snappy has little teeth that hold the diaper so you don't have to worry about diaper pins (or stabbing you baby with diaper pins...).

After you secure the cloth part (the part that will soak up the pee) you cover it all with a diaper cover (pictured above). The covers are thin but do their job. I don't want to say I don't like the pre-folds, but I am not in love with them. Honestly, I think if I had started out with the pre-folds I would like them, but I think I have been spoiled with my pocket diapers! I just have more faith in my pocket diapers; I am scared to use these pre-folds outside of the house. Now that I am home with CG for a few months, maybe I will get used to the Econobums and want to use them more.

I will definitely keep you all updated. Look forward to the next Cloth Diaper Saga update- we got Catie Grace a Charlie Banana cloth swim diaper. We didn't use cloth swim diapers during our trip to Orlando, but we will be using them over the summer. I'll let you know how it goes!
