Gerry and I recently decided that when Baby Catie gets here, we will be wrapping her precious little booty in cloth diapers instead of disposables.
We had a coupon to buy one cloth diaper and get one free, so of course we did so we could check them out. The diapers came yesterday so we got to check them out and we are both very excited. We chose the FuzziBunz diapers because they have really great reviews and they have the snaps instead of velcro. Velcro can wear but the snaps will last longer. Also, it is harder for babies to unsnap a diaper than to unvelcro one. The FuzziBunz diapers (as with many other brands) have one size diapers that grow with the baby. So the 20 or so diapers I will get when Catie Grace is born will fit her until she is ready to potty-train.
We decided to do cloth diapering for several reasons:
1. Cloth diapers are now just as convenient as disposable diapers. There are still different types of cloth diapers and we will be using the Pocket Diapers. (watch the videos below and they will explain it!)
2. Good quality cloth diapers can last not just with your first child, but also with subsequent children. That's savings many times over if you have more than one child (which we plan to).
3. On average, parents spend almost $2,000 per child on disposable diapers from birth to potty-training. With the cloth diapers, parents will spend around $400 for the start up costs of the diapers. After that, parents will pay for the water and energy cost of washing the diapers, but that won't cost nearly as much as disposable diapers for 2-3 years.
4. It is better for the environment. Throwing away 12 diapers a day for a newborn really adds up to the waste we have in landfills. I am not a "green" person by any means, but I think this is just good sense!
If anyone is interested in cloth diapering, or wants proof that we have not lost our minds, here are some links that I found very helpful:

The first video seen here shows how to change cloth diapers. We will be using the last kind shown, the pocket diaper. If you scroll down farther on this same page, there is a demonstration on how to clean a cloth diaper.
