So, I decided it was appropriate to start Catie Grace's story at the very beginning. Sorry for the long post, but I have to get caught up!
Before we even talked about getting married, Gerry and I had always both loved children. We also knew that we wanted to have a big family. The question was when to get started. My answer to this question was always Now! Now! Now! Gerry took a more conservative stance, so there we were, waiting for the perfect time.
In February when we were visiting my family for Mardi Gras, Gerry and I decided that the timing of our family really needed to be left up to God. With that, we decided to "give it to God" and see what happened. Of course I was ecstatic, but I assured Gerry that it would take a while for me to get pregnant.
I don't know why he listens to me.
About three weeks later, I was at home by myself and decided to take an early pregnancy test, even though I was SURE that it would be negative. I took the test and two lines showed up immediately. It was absolutely instantaneous! I really was not mentally prepared for it to be positive, so of course I started freaking out. I left my house and drove to Walgreens to get a digital pregnancy test (just because seeing the words would really confirm it). I took that one and it was positive too! The second test (and seeing the word "Pregnant") was enough validation for me.
I always knew that when I did get pregnant, I wanted to tell Gerry in a fun and creative way. Although we both thought it would take a while to get pregnant, I had already gotten some things together to make Gerry a little scrapbook. There was no way that I could keep it a secret any longer than about 10 minutes after seeing him, so I started frantically working on the scrapbook. It started with us meeting at UTC and cheering together and included highlights like Chi O date parties, trips to New Orleans and Europe, our wedding, our first home, and all the fun things we have done along the way! Of course, since I had about three hours to make it, it wasn't the best scrapbook ever, but it did the job. The last page was baby themed and said "Ready or Not Daddy- Here I Come!"
When Gerry got home that night, he started his nightly routine of sweeping, vaccuming, and cleaning everything in sight. (Yes, this is a nightly thing. I do not discourage it!) I tried to get him to stop cleaning because I needed to show him something, but he was just cleaning cleaning cleaning. Finally I told him I just needed his attention for FIVE MINUTES!!! We sat at the dining room table and I started showing him the scrapbook. I do stupid stuff like this all the time, so I know he was just wondering why I was so intent on him looking at this book right then.
We laughed at the silly pictures in the book, and cooed over how sweet our dogs were when they were just puppies. When Gerry got to the last page, he just started at it for a few seconds. Finally, he looked up at me and I was just grinning. I showed him the pregnancy tests and he was completely in shock! Even though I knew he was happy, I think he was in disbelief that it happened so quickly (so was I). Although we had the tests right there, it was still unbelievable that we were going to be parents!
I guess this really is what God had planned for us!
